As a food photographer, I’ve been reflecting on how to break away from the conventional approach to food photography. While perfectly styled dishes on a pristine table are undeniably beautiful, they often feel predictable. I want to push the boundaries of how we see and photograph food—exploring concepts that challenge not only my perspective but also how others perceive the subject. My goal is to create images that are striking, thought-provoking, and deeply artistic, all while sparking conversations and attracting clients who are eager for something unique.
I decided to start with a simple yet beloved subject: the avocado. From its humble form to its transformation into guacamole—one of my personal favourites—I envisioned a series that tells a story through three distinct stages.
First Image: A still-life composition that elevates the avocado into a standalone piece of art, celebrating its texture, shape, and natural beauty.
Second Image: The classic guacamole dish, presented in its perfected, polished glory, evoking tradition and comfort.
Third Image: A bold departure—destroying the dish and capturing the chaotic beauty of the aftermath. This “messy masterpiece” embodies the collision of art and imperfection, challenging traditional notions of food photography.
Through this series, I aim to blend artistic expression with culinary storytelling, creating images that are not only visually striking but also invite viewers to see food as more than just sustenance or a pretty picture—it’s a medium for art, creativity, and emotion.
